Why I Keep Ostomy Kits in Every Bag (and You Should Too!)
Living with an ostomy can be incredibly empowering—but let’s be honest, the mental side of it can also be one of the toughest challenges. One of the best ways I’ve found to take back control and reduce anxiety around unexpected leaks or blowouts is by packing multiple ostomy emergency day kits.
Whether I’m hitting the gym, heading to work, skiing for the day, or even just running errands, I’ve built grab-and-go kits that give me peace of mind. I keep them in my:
- Gym bag
- Work backpack
- Ski gear
- Vehicle glove box
- Carry-on luggage
What’s in My Ostomy Emergency Kit?
Here’s a breakdown of what I pack in each one:
- Ostomy pouch – Shop pouches & accessories »
- Flange/baseplate – Shop two-piece pouches »
- Barrier ring or seal – Shop barrier rings & strips »
- Skin prep wipes – Shop skin prep »
- Adhesive remover wipes – Shop adhesive removers »
- Disposal bags
- J-Cloth – a sturdy cloth to clean the site while doing a change
- Plastic sealable bag – for discreet and clean disposal
To make things as simple as possible, I pre-cut the J-cloth into six manageable strips for each kit. These are perfect for gentle cleaning or drying around the stoma area when access to a washroom isn’t ideal. I also ensure that every flange in my kits is ready to go — either pre-cut to my size or ordered directly from the factory already fitted to my stoma dimensions. This way, there’s zero guesswork in the moment, and I can manage everything confidently no matter where I am.
Why These Kits Changed My Life
One of the hardest parts of adapting to life with an ostomy is the fear of accidents in public. It can feel overwhelming, especially in those early months. But building these kits gave me back a sense of normalcy.
With my kits, I stopped worrying about:
- “What if my seal fails at work?”
- “Do I need to cut my outing short?”
- “Will I have what I need if I’m not home?”
And I started feeling confident enough to say yes to more activities.
Pro Tips for Packing Yours
- Keep at least 3–5 kits pre‑packed and stored in your go‑to bags.
- Store kits in cool, dry areas—your glove box can get hot, so rotate items like wafers often.
- Replenish right after using one so you’re always ready.
“These little kits are more than just supplies—they’re a mindset shift. They remind me that I’m prepared, strong, and capable of living life fully with my ostomy.”
